Trace Lafayette Federal Release

To find someone released from federal custody in a Lafayette Parish case, identify whether USMS, BOP, or a local contract jail held the person. The Western District of Louisiana docket supplies release and detention orders, while BOP covers designated federal prisoners. A departure from LPCC may be a federal transfer rather than community release. “Not in BOP custody” has a narrow meaning and does not rule out Marshals, state, local, immigration, or supervised status. Reconcile the docket, locator, and releasing-custodian event.

Lafayette Federal Custody Paths

The U.S. Marshals Service prisoner program controls many federal pretrial movements and may use state or local contract space. A person can leave LPCC under a Marshals transfer without entering the community. BOP becomes the correct locator after federal designation and admission. The Western District docket supplies detention, release, acquittal, sentencing, and transfer-related orders. Those three systems mark different stages and should not be collapsed into one federal roster.

Federal custody tied to Lafayette may move through USMS contract space before any BOP placement. The Western District docket supplies the release or detention order, while BOP answers only its own custody. An LPCC endpoint can therefore be a federal handoff rather than freedom. Read the docket, BOP status, and any receiving system together. “Not in BOP Custody” does not rule out supervised release, local custody, or immigration action.

Confirm a Federal Release

Search BOP by register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number, or by name with optional age, race, and sex. Compare identifiers before relying on a result. Then check the WDLA docket for the controlling order. If the person never entered BOP, the Marshals and local contract record may be more important. “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” confirms only that BOP custody ended.

  1. Search the BOP locator by federal identifier when available.
  2. Open the matching WDLA docket and find the controlling order.
  3. Check whether USMS still controlled transport or contract custody.
  4. Reconcile a local LPCC endpoint if contract space was used.
  5. Follow only a documented ICE or state handoff into that system.
Important: An absent roster result is only a lead. It does not prove a community release or rule out another custodian.

Two people with the same name must be separated by booking number, lawful date of birth, court docket, agency, and location. Never merge charges or events. The full Lafayette Parish search and release-record path is also set out on the released inmates home page.

Federal Release Record Routes

LPSO Records manages inmate files in physical and electronic form. It accepts a public-record request in person, by its designated email, or by U.S. mail. The agency warns that a request sent through another route or to another employee is not deemed received. A good request identifies the booked person, booking number, date range, and existing record. Ask for the custody/release transaction, date and time, release code or disposition, authority, destination or receiving agency if maintained, and releasable commitment or release documents.

Do not ask staff to research a broad question such as why someone got out. Ask for defined records. Request electronic copies and a cost estimate. If a field is missing, clarify whether it is not maintained, exempt, or outside the produced record. Those answers are not the same. Louisiana R.S. 44:32 provides a written-reason process when the custodian questions whether a record is public, but it is not a universal promise that production will be complete within five days.

USMS and WDLA Contacts

Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office operates LPCC at 916 Lafayette Street in Lafayette. Main, Intake and Booking is 337-236-5400. The facility operates continuously, but that does not establish public-record counter hours or guarantee release processing at a certain time. For a same-day narrow status question, Intake and Booking is the direct contact. Historical proof belongs with Records.

A BOP result may show name, register number, release date, and location. “Not in BOP Custody” does not settle USMS contract custody or another system.

The BOP Inmate Locator covers BOP custody from 1982 forward, while the WDLA docket route supplies federal court orders.

Lafayette Federal History Context

LPCC reports initial American Correctional Association accreditation on August 1, 1988, followed by reaccreditation at every assessment. That verified history places parish and municipal booking within a long-running correctional center. It does not say how many people were released, how long one booking record is retained, or what result a current search should return.

LPCC accreditation is relevant only when USMS used local contract space. It says nothing about USMS custody, a federal release order, or BOP discharge, and no federal prison in Lafayette Parish was verified.

WDLA Release Order Checks

The WDLA docket, not ClerkConnect, controls a federal release question. A signed detention or release order supplies legal authority, while USMS movement and BOP status show whether the person remained in federal custody after the order.

Dismissal has the same boundary. It resolves the documented charge or case, not every possible custody basis. If the person remains absent from LPCC and no community event is visible, check state, federal, and immigration systems based on actual record clues. Do not infer a destination from residence or rumor.

Release
An end to a named custodian's physical custody.
Transfer
A move to another custodian, not freedom.
Discharge
Completion of the applicable custody or supervision term.
Detainer
A request or authority that may lead to another custody handoff.

Correct Federal Status Errors

When an LPSO field appears wrong, contact Records with the booking number, the precise field, and the supporting record staff requests. A court error belongs with the Clerk department tied to the docket. LAVNS republishes source-agency data, so a state status issue begins with DPS&C or the assigned office. Record when each search was performed and keep Lafayette events in the source time zone.

A date alone may not settle the order of several same-day events. Label projected dates as projected and preserve the retrieval date. VINE alerts are useful leads, but the research describes daily state update language. The sheriff custody transaction and direct agency confirmation rank higher for a time-sensitive LPCC release.

USMS custody is movement-heavy. A federal defendant may be remanded, held in local contract space, transferred between contract facilities, acquitted, or delivered to BOP after conviction. BOP does not cover every pretrial stage. If a person leaves LPCC before BOP admission, use the WDLA docket and Marshals role to explain the movement. A BOP no-result cannot prove community release, and a later BOP “Not in Custody” label still needs the docket to identify release, transfer, or supervised status.

Federal identity matching should use a BOP register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when available. The name route also permits optional age, race, and sex, but those fields must be reconciled carefully. BOP coverage begins in 1982. Its displayed release date applies to BOP custody and may be followed by supervised release or another custodian. A signed WDLA order supplies legal authority; the locator and actual custodian supply execution. If ICE involvement appears in a real record, move to ODLS rather than assuming it from nationality or name.

Federal dates also need source labels. A docket date, transport date, BOP admission date, and BOP release date can fall on different days. Keep the time zone and retrieval date, and do not let an older docket forecast override a newer custody result. A docket error belongs with the federal court process; a BOP locator issue belongs with BOP; an LPCC contract-custody field belongs with LPSO. If two people share a name, use the federal register or case number before attributing an order or release.

Note: LPCC record retention is not publicly specified; ask the custodian and do not infer it from the portal's rolling booking window.
